Our Last Day in Brazil
Wed, 12 Sep 2007 23:33:52 CST
Throughout our trip we've done a lot of traveling in our van to get to and from our hotel and different locations. During these rides we have been able to see much of the port's surrounding landscape - large boats, industrial businesses, tall hotels, bridges and hilltops decorated with slum communities. This morning was our first adventure of actually entering a slum neighborhood instead of just driving by. Reencontro is a daycare facility for the slum community. After you are allowed in by the guard behind the large blue metal garage door you enter a low light foyer area with bits of sunlight shining in from down the hallways with laughter echoing off the cement walls. We visited classrooms filled with an average of 15 children per room/group, each decorated with the children's artwork and a few posters of the alphabet. Their bright eyes sparkled when we stopped by and their smiles grew as we sang "Jesus Loves Me" to help them practice their English. As we continued through the building we came across children during their break time running around on cement play areas; the older ones played football in one area while upstairs, younglings and toddlers bounced around and off each other in a fenced-in outdoor nursery - all the while life of the slums run by druglords could be seen on the other side of the outer wall. Playtime that day involved hugs, singing, laughs and climbing on visitors. We met Valeria, the coordinator of the daycare, and were able to find a semi-quiet room to pray for her, her family, the facility, the children and the community.
After lunch at another Brazilian barbeque, the team spent the afternoon "hangin" with Lynda at her place. Yes, we all got to see where our dear friend lives, although I don?t know if Pat was able to find where she keeps her books. The afternoon consisted of discussing how the trip went, sharing our favorite moments and future plans for Rio teams. There just wasn't enough time. Soon enough Lynda needed to pack for a conference she was going to be at for the rest of the week and then it was off to the airport.
Our flight didn't board until 10:00 pm but we were already checked in by 8:00 pm, so we settled down in some chairs and took time to pray for Lynda. It was so neat to be right there at the airport - outside of the Christian settings we had previously been in - surrounded by all kinds of people. I have to say that it's great to pray for someone after you've gotten to know them and pray for the work that they're involved with after you've been exposed to it. Once they're a part of your heart, you're never the same!

Monday at REAME!!
Mon, 10 Sep 2007 21:02:57 CST
Today we spent the entire day at REAME?the boys´ home where Lynda serves as the chaplain for the staff. ?REAME? is an acronym for ?Rescuing Children with Love from Risk Situations??and, man?that is exactly what they do. We had met many of the boys and the staff at Friday´s field trip at that camp. So it was fun pulling into the compound and being greeted this morning.
There is just something about BEING HERE. We´ve heard Lynda tell these stories and mention these names so much. Today we were here?to hear these people ourselves, and hug them, share lunch with them, and pray and worship together?we did the English/Portuguese combo of worship songs again?I love that!
The pillowcases we made at Chris´last weekend were a real hit down here?thanx to all who helped and prayed over those. The boys got into picking out their very own and really got into decorating them with their names. They were quick to take them up to their beds.
We met Gislaine who is the founder of REAME. The stories of these boys lives broke our hearts. In addition to the pillowcase project, we let our computer geek Kyle loose in their office and we hear he did some wonderful things?including installing a new wireless router we used some of our gift money to purchase. Nicole headed up a redecorating project in their downstairs computer room. Nancy and Lynda taped Gislaine´s story for an upcoming article. And Kelly played hard with the kids. All in all, it was a great day of just ?hanging out?...a great day of ?being here.?
On a personal note, I must say this has been a terrific group of people to travel with! We have been a TEAM since the get-go. Really looking out for ways to help and serve each other--a joy and delight to work with! Now, there?s an answer to prayer!
Gotta go pack and get some sleep before our next LONG day tomorrow. We check out, go visit one of the Reincontro Day Cares and then go to Lynda?s apartment to relax and pray with her before heading to the airport for our overnight flight home.

Ja Estou Crucificado con Cristo

Kelly
After a quick freshen up and gelato for dinner, we attended evening service at First Baptist Church of Bairro Vermelho where Gislaine´s husband is pastor. What a privilege to watch 18 people baptized and receive the Lord´s supper for the first time! (Kyle says we need to get busy!) Pastor Marcos opened with 2 Corinthians 5:17 and also shared from John 3:3-8 (yes, you need to go and read it). After every person was baptized, everyone broke out in song: Cristo vive en mim, alleluia ? Christ redeemed me, Christ live in me. The baptistery was makeshift, although you would not know it. Behind two sliding wooden doors was a mural of a river in a forest like setting?beautiful, as if everyone were actually being baptized at the river. It was very emotional to all who were there, including the Calvary team. Language was no barrier because those being baptized as well as Pastor Marcos wore their heart on their faces, resoundingly confident in their affirmation of becoming a new creature in Christ. Another wonderful experience tonight was to have Flavia´s friend Juliana joined us for the service. Lynda was wise to seat Juliana between Kyle and Kelly who were able to share the significance of baptism. Only God knows right now what seeds may have been planted.
I almost forgot?the entire team was invited to sing a couple of worship songs in English while the congregation sang along in Portuguese to In the Secret and Shout to the Lord. You never heard a more precious sound?.like a piece of heaven, with tribes, tongues and nations represented.
Tomorrow we will spend the day at REAME working on the pillow case project with the boys?we can all hardly wait!

Prayer Tour on the move. . .
Sat, 08 Sep 2007 20:36:26 CST
Before we left the hotel, Nancy lead us in a time of reflection in God´s Word when we discussed what is required to spread the gospel throughout the world. Among other things, we identified persistent, Spirit-led, bold prayer to send workers for the harvest! We also discussed ways that God has already removed real obstacles in the lives of our team members ? things that could have prevented us from being effective here. We are so thankful, and so ready to see what He will do in response to our prayers!
At the top of Sugarloaf, we prayed for Rio and Niteroi, for Reame, the workers and the boys, for First Baptist Church of Niteroi, and for God´s kingdom to be advanced in the world. We prayed with our eyes open, facing Niteroi with hands outstretched, and closed with singing ?Shine, Jesus, Shine.? The song was Chris´ idea (and it was a wonderful one) but we stumbled over the words a little. Good thing God knows all the words!
We went to lunch at a nice restaurant at the bottom of Sugarloaf with a lovely view of the mountains and the bay. At many restaurants here, there is a buffet and you fill up your plate and they weigh it at the end of the line, determining how much your bill will be!
By the way, one fun part of our morning was driving along Copacabana Beach and Ipenema Beach ? the stuff of songs and legends! This is a holiday weekend in Brasil, and the beaches were full of people. Very beautiful!
More to come from Chris. . .
In his service ? Celia Stratman
After we had finished lunch, we travelled through the streets of Rio, masterfullly maneuvered by our terrific driver Helio, who by the way is not a believer. Yesterday at our Sitio, Pastor Nelson decided that he needed to witness to him all day, so we are praying for God´s blessing on that time. Helio is most gracious to us Americanos and we think he is calling Linda, ?Sister Linda?.
We drove to the famous Cristo Redentor or Christ the Redeemer statue that sits atop a very high hill overlooking all of Rio, the statue that everyone thinks of when talking about Rio. We took a cog train up the mountain, which is very similar to the one that is used on Pike´s Peak. I was sort of expecting a hush when up there, as in my mind, it would be a holy site. Well, nothing could be further from the truth as it was nearly a carnival atmosphere with many people laughing and taking pictures with their arms outstretched like the statue. We found a (sort of) quiet spot behind the statue and prayed for the people of the area who probably don´t even know why the artist posed Jesus like that, or what his sacrifice was all about. Also, we prayed for the people who see this statue everyday and cannot afford to go up to see it. We closed our worship singing ?There is a Redeemer?.
Dinner was very interesting as we decided on a light dinner within walking distance of the hotel. Of course, to complicate matters, there were 14 of us with 4 who spoke Porturguese and the menus were in Portuguese. It was the stuff of sitcoms to see the waiter try to understand through interpreters what we wanted. Dinner came in waves with Celia and I getting hot dogs wrapped in dough and others getting varieties of sandwiches. For my daughters sake, I have still more fruits that I am learning to love?passion fruit and Guava, oh yum....
Signing off for the Rio Team?Chris Tindell

Day 2 The Outing
Fri, 07 Sep 2007 20:27:10 CST
Loaded into the van?fun that we could all fit in one, and picked up a couple of translators along the way. Then we headed for the ?sitio?, a large park setting with a shelter and a swimming pool that is available for groups to rent. Our ministry funds paid for the site rental as well as a large bus to transport all of the workers and their families and the boys who live at REAME.
What great hours we spent, interacting and playing with kids, helping the women (staff and relatives) make little blessing books, taking photos of their families. We struggled with whether or not to bring cameras on this trip and today it was a good thing we did. It was PHOTO MINISTRY! The families were so excited to have photos of themselves (we had a small portable color printer) to put in their books.
Kelly, Kyle and Tim did yeoman?s work in the pool ? chicken fights, flips, and general rough-housing with the boys, who absolutely loved it. Our men have sore shoulders tonight!
It was a day of tremendous blessing. When we all sang songs together in English and Portuguese ? a taste of heaven to sing SHOUT TO THE LORD together. Praying blessing upon one another, Brazilian and American. Truly a day to remember, and one that fulfilled our hopes prayers for it.

The Ride Over (And More)
Thu, 06 Sep 2007 19:45:03 CST
We made our way to the Downings and Finleys. They work at a college that trains missionaries, among other things. It was a great time of fellowship, as we were able to meet with a lot of the students. Kyle, Tim, and I had lunch with a couple of Brazilian guys. They spoke English reasonably well. We then went back to our hotel and got settled, changed money, and I fell asleep. Tim woke me up around 6:20 for our meeting about the flip-flops. After that we went to a fantastic restaurant down the alley and around the corner from our hotel. I had a cheese, tomato, olive, and oregano crepe. It was amazing! We came back for a very nice team meeting, broke up, and here I am. Everybody is quite friendly here, even the immigration officer. He said I would like Rio, and gave me an extra week on my passport!

Pretty much everything in there is subject to change, but this should give you a general idea of what you can be praying for and when. Remember, Brazilian time is two hours ahead of Chicago time this time of year - it actually changes to four hours ahead when we fall back for daylight saving time and they jump forward for theirs (remember, they're in summer when we're in winter). So, how about some background info on Niterói? If you want some nitty gritty details, check out Niterói at Wikipedia. This is where Lynda Oatley is based, and where we'll be spending the bulk of our time. Niterói sits across the bay from Rio de Janeiro and has a population of roughly 500,000 people. And that image at the top, that's the official flag of Niterói. I'll try to get the day by day itinerary up here tonight or tomorrow. I hope you'll take the time to pray for our trip, for the people of Brazil and for Reame and the ministry of Lynda there.
Much more to come!
